Vision building is a powerful tool for achieving and maintaining your success. Today's practice environment demands decisive decision making. With a clear vision of where the practice should be headed you can have that decisiveness. Doctor CEOs lead, direct, build teams and are responsible for the execution of "the plan" (variously referred to as the strategic plan, business plan, and organizational plan). But what gives life to a plan in the first place? What tells everyone in the organization what the goal of the plan is? Most business commentators would say the answer is the CEO with a compelling "vision".

It is a significant challenge for the leader of any organization to articulate a vision that sparks concerted action by all persons working for the entity. We find too many doctors although desiring to have their vision in place just don't take the time and don't have a process to get it done.

In order to arrive at the point of even being able to state a vision, it is essential that a doctor CEO make assumptions about events and circum- stances, some of which are in and others of which are out of your control as a business leader. It is the effectiveness that the CEO and certain members of your team bring to the task of making assumptions that helps to generate a great vision and resulting plan. We create the environment to ask and answer the important future oriented questions. For example, it is important to ask about plans for transition: is your practice now a solo practice that should transition into a temporary or permanent group practice? What size of facility and staffing is needed in the immediate and longer range future? What does the local demographics tell you about the needs of your area for the optimum size of a practice in 3, 5, 10 years?  Are you "state of the art" in your practice?

  • We Provide Time and Process. In our view this is the critical mix that enables a vision to flow. The commitment of the doctor to act NOW to state a vision clearly and being guided by a business development process. In our experience vision is primarily the responsibility of the doctor in his/her role as CEO, i.e., it is a product of the professional that went to school, took the risk entering practice and now will be the visionary that produces the best vision.   • Assessment. A primary part of starting the process properly is to have a facilitator that blocks the subjective view of a current practice organization and emphasizes the objective view. With a good assessment in place most doctors see the need for clarity in the statement of a vision for the practice.

  • We Help You Picture It. Vision, in part, is a view of a desired future for the practice based on the Assessment and the needs identified. It must be to the point and able to be clearly articulated orally and in writing to every party in interest: staff, patients, community, spouse, suppliers and all professional advisors. All of these parties, if they understand the clear vision, have a role to help the organization.

  • Get Away. Our view is that it is helpful to get away from the practice, from homes and even from the local town. Why? Because it seems that some geographic distance also allows those participating in a visioning process to think more objectively and less subjectively. Being away seems to help CEOs be more open to a guiding process and look out at a desired goal. On returning it follows that the goal is to focus on committing energy, time and financial and other resources to achieving the vision.

  • The Critical Element: Caulk all the rest up to a perfunctory non-sizzling result unless you have a process that helps facilitate PASSION. It is the vital aspect that others catch when a leader communicates the vision. In our work we find that unless the vision has behind it a leader that is committed and will get up every day and help make it happen, it won't happen.
